Whiplash

Whiplash refers to the sharp, rapid and forceful movement of the neck back and forth, much like the cracking of a whip. Most often seen in rear-end car accidents, as well as contact sports collisions, assault and falls, whiplash produces a wide range of injury, which varies from patient to patient. Common symptoms, though, include neck, jaw, or back pain, stiffness, discomfort turning one’s head, headaches, numbness, tingling, dizziness, tinnitus, vision issues, moodiness, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, and sleep disturbances. In some cases, patients recover within a few weeks, while others deal with chronic neck pain and other lifelong issues.

An extensive treatment plan for whiplash will aim to manage the pain and restore neck function back to normal. The exact treatment needed depends on the extent of the injury, as well as any other sustained injuries. In addition to physical therapy, treatments may include rest, hot or cold compresses on the neck, over-the-counter medications, muscle relaxants, and lidocaine injections.
